BEWARE OF SCAMMERS selling nice RV’s at very low prices on Craigslist, they are Ruthlessly Evil and Heartless
Hello there, my name is Damon and I could have gotten scammed out of $2,000 trying to buy a “decent RV at a really good price” (if there is even such a thing?, and no, there is not any such a thing) on Craigslist if my “spidy senses” had not kicked in.
Here is how I tried to make them regret trying to scam me and others.
In memory of my friend Buck Smith, who was in his 80’s and got scammed out of about $30,000, I am sharing my experience here in hopes it will help someone not get scammed. The loss was very devastating to Buck and his wife Elaine so please be careful and spread awareness about scams and scams artist online, and also over the phone and even through email and snail-mail.
When my elderly mother finally got online before she passed away I was very concerned that she would fall for some kind of a scam. And after Buck and Elaine got scammed I was even more concerned so I preached to her a lot about being aware of scams. I was pleased when I found out all she could really comprehend and ended up wanting to do online was playing spades, she really did not even use Facebook much so I got to were I did not worry so much about her getting taken to the proverbial cleaners.
Before continuing to read my story, if you are concerned you or your loved ones might get scammed, please read the following articles to learn the tell tell sings of scams and how to avoid them.
Please do not end up like Buck and Elaine. They come close to being homeless in their 80’s, so read my story and share it with your loved ones.
This first link is to an Australian government website that list some types of scams and a lot of information about how to spot and avoid them. The second link is to an extensive list of various kinds of online and offline scams. The 3rd link is to a short and concise article from the BBB that was very informative. It is pretty simplified and would be something you could look over with your elderly loved ones if you’re concerned they might get scammed.
Now I will share my experience of how I could have gotten scammed trying to buy an RV because I was desperate.
BE VERY CAREFUL ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE DESPERATE FOR SOMETHING.
I am looking to buy a 2/3 acre lot and put a Loft Cabin Shell on it and do the work finishing it myself. The whole process could take between 2-3 years and I would need a place to stay while doing the work until I at least got the cabin finished enough to rough it out and stay in it before the work was completed.
I considered renting a spare room from a close friend but I am not easy to live with and I did not want to strain our friendship. My initial idea of making the most of the money my mom left me in insurance money when she died was to get an RV I could hopefully live in for 10 years or so. I was looking at new or newer RV’s in about the $15,0000 to $20,000 range and then I had the idea about the Loft Cabin. But after the idea of doing a Cabin instead I then had the idea that I would look into an RV under $2,000 to live in for 1-2 years on my friends property.
I had just found out I would have an additional $8,000 to $10,000 dollar expense of tying to property into the city water and sewer and that kinda put the project out of my reach so I was desperate to find a “decent RV at a really good price” and that desperation almost got me in trouble.
I found about 8 really nice RV’s for under $2,000 on Craigslist. I sensed it was all a scam pretty quickly but if I had not been desperate I would have seen right away it was too good to be true and never would have even inquired about the RV’s if I had not been desperate.
I had an email exchange with an “Amy” and a “Tanya”. I am sharing my exchange with Tanya to show how ruthless and heartless these sorry bastards are.
When I realized it was all a scam by looking to see what the real value of those RV’s of that year model are and what they are generally selling for, and if Ebay even offered the kind of sight unseen shipping but yet money back billing guarantee they were talking about, I decided to have some fun with “Amy” and “Tanya” and waist some of their time because I had some time to kill and that would be less time they would have to spend scamming someone else.
Both of their stories were very very similar and tried to tug at my heart-strings. Their stories were so close, and even the language so similar, that I now suspect Amy and Tanya were either the same person or different people involved with the same group of scammers.
The first bad sign was that when I called the numbers listed to call neither one answered, and when it went to voicemail the messages said something like “the text inbox you have reached is full so please leave a message”. They was using an online voice messaging service like the one Google offers.
Then I received a text from that number asking for my email address to get more information about the RV and I also got an appeal to my sympathy by a brief statement that they was very desperate to sell the RV quickly because of the loss of a loved one, in both cases they claimed they had lost their husbands in last 1-2 months.
Here is that exchange with “Tanya”. I led on that I was also very desperate and really needed a great deal on an RV at a very terrible time in my life.
And then I took some true aspects of my story and added on enough to make them think that if they was scamming me it would cause me to commit suicide if I got scammed, and they did not care at all that they could push me over the edge and cause me to kill myself.
That is why I said they were both ruthless and heartless.
When I got “crazy” with Amy she quit responding but Tayna really wanted my $2,000 even when I told her I would be killing myself immediately if I found out I was getting scammed.
So I took it to the next level and told Tanya that if I ended up getting scammed and killing myself I would be sure to hunt her down and take her out too.
Here is Tanya’s first email to me.
Tanya = 2007 Keystone Montana 3475 RLS , is still for sale. This camper is in great shape. I’m the original owner. It has no damage or hidden defects. It is in immaculate condition, meticulously maintained and hasn’t been involved in any accident. I have a clear title, without liens or loans on it, under my name. I am selling it at this final price of $2,000 because my husband died 2 month ago (he had a heart attack) and it brings me bad memories and I, along with my daughter decided to sell the house and so we moved in Butte trying to start a new life. That’s the reason why I want to sell it asap and my last price is $2,000 including delivery to your home address.
Let me know if you are interested, email me back.
ME = Hello Tanya, I’m so sorry to hear about your loss and I hope you’re able to start a new beginning with you and your daughter. Maybe being in a such a beautiful place as Butte will help. I’m also starting a new beginning after my mother passed away. She had dementia and I was her full-time caretaker for the last couple years and she passed away a little over 3 months ago.
I’m definitely interested in your RV and would be willing to pay the full 2000 with no qualms about it if it is in as good of shape as you say. I would appreciate if you could take a short video of the inside and the outside and email it to me somehow or take some pictures and send me those. The RV park that I plan on staying in requires an appearance inspection for RVs over 10 years old. And San Angelo is a good ways away from Houston so I want to be able to make sure that I would definitely buy it after giving it a rigorous inspection. When you say it has been meticulously maintained I suppose that means that the roof has been resealed recently correct?
I am 52 and single and me and my dog want to live in it for a good long time so this is my last big decision in life and I want to make sure I do it correctly and if your RV is in that great of shape this will be the right thing for me to do.
I contacted the RV Resort and they do have spots available now so I could receive the delivery as soon as you wanted to do that. If you cannot send me a video or pictures and you’re confident it will pass inspection you would not have to send them but I would prefer looking at more pictures or a video before you make the drive.
Thank you ma’am and once again my sincere condolences go out to you. I lost my mom and 16 and a half year old chocolate lab within 2 months so I am recently familiar with extreme grief also.
Please contact me again ASAP and have a blessed afternoon and evening.
Me = I am even more interested after looking into the specs for the RV. I would be willing to meet you halfway if you would like because I think it is about 6 hours from Houston to San Angelo if I’m correct. But that would be dependent upon getting my uncle to come help me because he has a fifth wheel hitch and I do not have one on my Dodge Dually. And from the one picture you have posted it looks like it would be good so if you could just send a few more pictures I’m almost certain that I would purchase it immediately.
Me = Hello again Tonya. I inquired about 8 or 9 RVs today and after going back and looking at the Craigslist ads for all of them and watching the YouTube video about your specific model again I am certain this is the best deal that I could get and would be willing to commit to buying it at that price sight unseen. The offer to meet you halfway would still stand good if I can get my uncle to do so at a good time for everyone.
Please contact me back as soon as possible because I’ve had three people respond to my contacts already and I want to be able to confidently tell them that I’ve already found the RV that is right for me if anyone else calls me back. Thank you very much
_____________________________________Me = Yes ma’am I am very serious about buying the RV and I definitely have the cash in hand and would like you to go ahead and get eBay to send me that information. The delivery address will be 1601 South Main Street Highlands Texas 77562. My full name is Damon ***** and my phone number is 281- ***-****.If you’ll contact eBay and get them to send me that information I’ll go the RV Resort and prepay for the lot for it to be dropped on. I was looking into buying a quarter acre and putting a custom-built log cabin shell on it and finishing the inside work myself but doing this instead will allow me to keep my mother’s brand new car and pay it off in full. So after I get that information from eBay I will reserve the spot for it to be delivered. Sorry for not understanding that you had already moved to Butte and once again I wish you and your daughter well in your new life.
______________________________________Tanya = Okay Damon, I have received your info and I will initiate the transaction through eBay and they will contact us with all necessary details about this transaction. Let me know when you will hear from them. God Bless and Have a great day!
_______________________________________ME = Hey Tonya, my friend Johnny recently told me I could spend a week or so at his cabin and Durango Colorado and I thought I would never take him up on the offer, but I’m in need of a vacation due to the stress of caring for my mother for several years, it might take me years just to get over the stress but I will never get over the loss of my mom, so I called my friend Johnny and he said the offer is still good and I could come to Butte Montana and pick the RV up myself and save you the shipping cost, and that would put more money in your pocket so you and your daughter could take some time off and do some exploring around the area since you just moved there and probably would like to see the sights. My friend says I can swing by his house and pick up the keys to the cabin anytime I want to and I’m going to do that because I thought while I was in Colorado I might try out some of that good stuff up there if you know what I mean LOL, I’ve never had any of that really really good stuff before.Let me know about when would be a good day for you I could probably get things wrapped up here and be in Colorado in about 4 days and maybe 3-4 days later meet you in Butte with cash in hand. Thanks and have a good evening.
Tanya = Hi,
Please tell me if you have received the invoice from eBay because they contacted me and informed that the invoice was sent you. If you have received the invoice please tell me if you are able to make the payment today to start the shipping in this tonight. I wait your response asap. Sometimes I receive the messages from eBay in my Spam mail folder; maybe you should check yours as well. Get back to me once you receive it. Thank you and have a nice day.
ME = Didn’t you get my last email Tonya? One of my friends offered to let me go stay in his cabin for a week and I never really even considered it but I will never have another opportunity like this to travel and see such beautiful places as Colorado and Montana and everything in between.
I’ve never been out of Texas except to Louisiana few times and before I have to go back to work I’ve been planning on taking a short vacation but I think I could wait long enough to take a 2-3 week vacation probably.
Since we are both in grief I understand that saving the cost of shipping would help you a lot financially because things or so messed up after family members die.
I’m still going through extreme pain and have been considering suicide a lot lately because unless I can lower my monthly cost of living I do not want to live anymore, but finding an RV at this price and having the opportunity to travel and see so many things makes me want to live at least a little while longer.
Me and my eight month old lab would have a great time and maybe I could even talk a girl I am interested in into going with me. That would probably help me out with her and be another thing that would make my life livable again.
Please let me know a day and time that would be good to meet you in Butte, or maybe we could meet halfway between there and Colorado in maybe five or six days.
Thank you so much for bringing a ray of sunshine into my life during this terrible terrible time in my life. You might have just saved my life, at least for a few years.
Tanya = Hi, read the invoice….you have it all there. if you need further clarification or info please call eBay payments support, you have the number on your invoice, they can explain better. If you are interested in buying the trailer have to tell you that this is the only way I can close this deal at this point.
you need to confirm payment to eBay of course
call them: (860) 506-5084
ME = I am starting to get a bad feeling about this Tonya.
I told you getting this RV would be a big blessing and being able to travel and take my friend up on his offer would be a very very big blessing to me and it might make me want to live again, at least for a while until the suffering becomes overwhelming again.
Because of your loss I thought you would be sympathetic to my loss and you would want me to be able to take my buddy up on his offer and travel a little bit and see the country. I had already thought perhaps I could make some memories that would make me want to live until God takes me out of this world. I even prayed that he would bless you and your daughter so much for blessing me so much.
I’m going to call that number and if this seems to be a scam I’m going to go ahead and shoot myself because my mother got scammed in the middle of when I was taking care of her because she had dementia, and if she had not been scammed I would have about $30,000 in my pocket right now and would want to live at least until that money was gone.
If you don’t hear back from me about it, a yes or no whether I will take the deal or not after calling the number, well then I guess I will have decided to go ahead and end my suffering.
I don’t really know I’m going to have to pray about this again Tonya.
Tanya = I am a honest person working hard for my money and I don’t like to hear when someone compare me with a scammer. Tonya
Well I don’t mean to accuse you of something you’re not it’s just things are not adding up. Please call me as soon as possible so we can work this out.
Before I had to go out on disability, after my car wreck, and my first major bipolar episode due to my traumatic brain injury, I was a computer college graduate with a masters degree in computer science engineering making about $200,000 a year. And if your computer is not behind a very good firewall and a highly secure governmental level VPN I will be able to hunt you down, and one of us is going down and probably both of us because I do not want to go to prison.
And yes I will spend my last $7,000 to find you because evil people need to be eliminated from the gene pool.
If you’re not one of them you have nothing to worry about but if you are we will both be appearing before the Judgment seat of God pretty quickly.
Call me back at 281-***-**** right now or I’m going to start doing the research on you and your computer or Network
Tanya = Hi, have you talked with eBay?
ME = Say you’re prayers bitch or dude or whatever you are, even if I have to go half way across the world I am going to hunt you down and take vengeance on behalf of my dead mom and dear old man friend who both got scammed.
You need to be sent before the judgment seat of God as soon as possible.
At least now I have a goal that will keep me wanting to live until I find you.
When I just prayed to God he said your time is up and he wants me to do this mission for him, and that I can get eternal rewards for hunting you down and taking you out, you disgusting peace of shit.
Pinging your IP is my first step. If you’re in the country I will find you within a week, 2 weeks if you’re on another continent and within a month no matter even if you life on the other side of the world.
You better find Jesus really quickly.
Tanya = HUUUUUUU PIGGGGG !!!!!
AS YOU CAN SEE “TANYA” IS NOT TANYA and “she” did not care a single bit if she would have caused me to kill myself or not, that is why these people are super-cruel and heartless, so please BEWARE OF SCAMS ON CRAIGSLIST selling “decent RV’s at a really good price”.
As the cliche goes, if something seems to be too good to be true, it most probably is not true.
Be careful because these assholes do this full time and they are good at what they do.
PS, I did not respond to the scammer again because if I played my part well enough to make them think I was really capable and crazy enough to hunt them down and kill them for being total pieces of shit, I did not want to ruin it but maybe leave them thinking in the back of their mind that they had better always be looking over their shoulder.
AND YES I DID TAKE THE TIME TO HAVE ALL THE RELEVANT ADS ON CRAIGSLIST FLAGGED AND REMOVED AS PROHIBITED. You should do the same if you find any and make it harder for them to scam people. One thing I noticed was that both of the RV’s I looked were listed several times and in several different Texas cities.
